(More customer reviews)I just purchased a Troy-Bilt 4HP triple blade Edger at Lowes yesterday. The unit edges well. We have a long driveway (500 ft.) with lots of curves, and I believe we can keep grass from growing into the driveway with this unit. On the downside, I've only tried to start it a couple times, with poor success both times. Right out of the box, it took about 15 pulls to start the first time. After running for several minutes, I released the safety bar, which kills the engine (there is no clutch to stop the blade... releasing the bar kills the engine). Then, with the engine already warm from just runing, it took another 10-15 pulls to re-start. The unit has no choke, only a primer bulb which I believe contributes to hard starting. Zapped by "big brother" again!
UPDATE: After using this edger for about 2 months, I believe my rating to be a little to hard. The problem is that the number of pump primes needed to start the machine cold is considerably more than stated in the instructions, at least on my edger. The instructions written on the edger say to pump it 3X. The instructions in the users manual say to pump the primer 6X. By experience, I've learned that if I pump it 12X, it usually starts on the first pull. As long as I know this, it is not really a problem. Our driveway is 450 feet long, so requires 900 feet of edging total (because there are two sides). The edger does a good job. However, it will only dig a maximum of 2 1/4". This is lower than other edgers I've used. Because the edge of our drive is higher than the ground, if I edgw with the wheels on the hard driveway surface per the instructions, I can only dig less than an inch deep. If I want to edge deeper (up to 2 1/4"), I have to have the wheels on the ground. This is contrary to the instructions, but works. Because I'm satisfied with the edger, and have overcome the initial starting problem, I would change my rating to a 4.0 if amazon allowed that.

BCS Tiller Tractor 732 340CC Honda #8C1V0580 Review

(More customer reviews)While I don't personally own this tiller, I too have rented it on several occasions for use as a tiller. I have no experience with the other attachments. This tiller is a beast to be sure, but I've never experienced any "runaway" problems with it. This is largely due to the fact that it's a gear driven machine and "running away" is virtually impossible. It has two speeds and neither will make you trot.
The tiller has a selectable differential drive allowing for very easy turns at the ends of rows, or locked in for better traction in the mud. Nice feature. It does a fantastic job cutting through sod and even cutting a new row, I rarely have to till the row more than twice to get the soil where I want it. I use this for the heavy work and a little Honda FG110 for weeding and maintanence.
The BCS is a rock-solid performer and pretty nearly indestructable . There's a reason equipment rental businesses rent these out to the general public, after all. My only peeve with them are their prices, both initially and later when you buy add-ons. True, because it's a multi-usage system you'll save money in the long run over buying single purpose machines if you collect the add-ons, but the initial price is still a jaw-dropper.
All things considered this is a superb machine and I highly recommend it to anyone doing some serious tilling.

Troy-Bilt Horse 20-Inch 305cc Briggs & Stratton 1450 Series Gas Powered Forward Rotating Tiller Review

(More customer reviews)I've always liked Troy-Bilt's heavier tillers, and used an 8-HP model for many years until I finally traded it off to a landscaper for some hardscaping. My remarks ONLY apply to Troy-Bilt's heavy models - 8 HP and up. I would pass their smaller tillers by.
Troy-Bilt's design is rough and ready, but the machine is heavy (a positive in a tiller), it's well-balanced, the gearing in the transmission will take constant use, and the controls work flawlessly. If you aren't breaking new ground, you really can operate it one-handed as advertised - it really is that smooth. Two things to watch out for, though: hit a big rock and this tiller can take quite a jump (picture several hundred pounds in the air with tines rotating), and you need to be very careful in reverse, as the machine is (properly) balanced for forward motion, not reverse.
I have also want to note for clarification purposes that while the description of this tiller indicates that the transmission is cast iron, that refers to the casing - the gears are actually bronze, which is considerably better! Finally, correcting another reviewer, the maximum tilling depth is 8". It cannot till a foot deep. Considering that a lot of tractor-mounted, Ag tillers only till 8" or so, I'd say that's more than adequate!
So why 4 stars instead of 5? Two reasons - Briggs and Stratton engines, and cost. Troy-Bilt used to offer engine alternatives, including the Kohler Magnum. I've regretted most purchases I've made with Briggs engines, the latest being a top-of-the-line Ariens commercial snowblower that was recalled, for all things, for engine fires! The cost of the Troy-Bilts has now risen to the point where I think you're paying too much for an antiquated design, in spite of its virtues. At this price point, I'd start seriously considering a BCS tiller for a little more. But if the price of the Troy-Bilt has already maxed you out and you can live with Briggs, you are getting a good tiller - you'll have to come to terms with the value for the money for yourself.
Troy-Bilt is now owned by MTD, a company that is known for its value-priced merchandise in the big box home centers and in discount stores, not for top quality equipment (nothing wrong with that in itself, of course). As a result, however, I'm not expecting any investment into Troy-Bilt improvements either.

Poulan Pro PP2000T Cultivator Trimmer Attachment Review

(More customer reviews)The Poulan cultivator / tiller that I purchased from Amazon worked great for a few hours, but then it broke in two places 1) down low where the shaft connects into the cultivator AND 2) much worse than this, when it failed, it stripped out the shaft ABOVE the click-link connector; in the top half of the unit (the piece that you dont get when you purchase the cultivator / tiller) into which this cultivator / tiller attaches. So while my engine still worked, NONE of my attachments worked as the receptical into which each connects was stripped by the cultivator / tiller attachment. Needless to say, I was VERY VERY unhappy. While Amazon refunded the money for the Poulan cultivator / tiller, they did not pay to fix the stripped shaft, and I was left to pay to have that replaced myself, a really big hassle.
In my opinion (I am not an engineer) it seems like the hard work begin done by the cultivator / tiller puts far too much tension into the small spinning rod inside the shaft of the entire unit. Tilling dirt causes a much greater resistance than edging, trimming, or blowing. I am surprised that more folks haven't experienced or reported this issue.

(More customer reviews)I received the tiller in timely fashion, assembled it easily and was amazed when the Honda engine fired on the first pull. When the transmission is disengaged it is easy to roll back and forth to the garden.
I had previously had my new garden plot broken up, but a few passes back and forth had it looking like a powder puff...smooth, no clods, and really ready for planting.
All in all, I am pleased with my choice of tiller, even though it was a bit more expensive than some others I could have bought.
