Fiskars 9866 Telescoping Rotary Cultivator Review

Fiskars 9866 Telescoping Rotary Cultivator

I purchased this from Lowes. Tines are aluminum, but rest of unit is constructed from hard plastics/flimsy metal. The handle telescopes and is extended when in use, using a plastic twist-lock to lock the handle open. Tines break up dirt fine, but if you exert any 'elbow grease' i.e. downward pressure on the tool, the upper-half of the handle slowly collapses/slides downward. Needless to say was returned.

BCS Tiller Tractor 732 340CC Honda #8C1V0580 Review

While I don't personally own this tiller, I too have rented it on several occasions for use as a tiller. I have no experience with the other attachments. This tiller is a beast to be sure, but I've never experienced any "runaway" problems with it. This is largely due to the fact that it's a gear driven machine and "running away" is virtually impossible. It has two speeds and neither will make you trot.
The tiller has a selectable differential drive allowing for very easy turns at the ends of rows, or locked in for better traction in the mud. Nice feature. It does a fantastic job cutting through sod and even cutting a new row, I rarely have to till the row more than twice to get the soil where I want it. I use this for the heavy work and a little Honda FG110 for weeding and maintanence.
The BCS is a rock-solid performer and pretty nearly indestructable . There's a reason equipment rental businesses rent these out to the general public, after all. My only peeve with them are their prices, both initially and later when you buy add-ons. True, because it's a multi-usage system you'll save money in the long run over buying single purpose machines if you collect the add-ons, but the initial price is still a jaw-dropper.
All things considered this is a superb machine and I highly recommend it to anyone doing some serious tilling.

I purchased this tiller from Home Depot (apologies to seller), and used it two times last fall for no more than a combined one hour. I went to start it today, roughly 4 1/2 months after the last use, cord snapped immediately. This tiller has been meticulously cared for and stored in a heated garage over winter. Buyer's beware.

This Tow Behind Tiller was worth every red cent that we paid for it. Hubby tilled our veggie garden in record time this year. We have a walk behind rototiller and, in the past, what he did in 3 days this season would have taken weeks. Do we recommend this item? You betcha!

Mantis 7225-15-02 2-Cycle Gas-Powered Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand (CARB Compliant) Review

Mantis 7225-15-02 2-Cycle Gas-Powered Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand (CARB Compliant)
Average Reviews:

I purchased the tiller a couple of years ago and have been largely disappointed by it. Yes, it is light weight and can churn up soil, but I agree with another reviewer who found that it drags. Also, getting it started is a matter of trial and error and has nothing to do with the amount of choke. However, my main problem is with the way it handles weeds. I have a lot of weeds in my yard in Louisiana and what attracted me to the tiller was the promise that it would chop up the weeds. In fact the misleading advertisement claimed the machine to be almost a substitue for a weed eater. Well, not only does it not do that but the weeds entangle in the tine shaft so that within minutes the tines have ceased to run. This usually means stopping my work; taking apart the tine pins; and then untangling the weeds manually. By the time one is done, one has spent more time on untangling than in tilling. Incidentally, this is also a perfect opportunity for loosing the pins {note: Mantis is no longer selling the pins by themselves as they used to do, but one has to buy them as a part of a (mostly) unnecesssary kit}
I am sure it would work very well in a location where the only job requirement is to break up the soil...but lets face it, that's not a real life situation, is it? There are usually weeds and grass in those locations one wants to till.
All in all, this is a very disappointing product. I wish I had sent it back when I had the chance.

You'll be ready to garden all year round with the Mantis 7225-15-02 Two-Cycle Gas-Powered Tiller/Cultivator. With a powerful engine, durable tines, and compact profile, the Mantis Tiller/Cultivator is ideal for creating new gardens, tilling in narrow rows and raised beds, or along fences. With the help of the included border-edger accessory and convenient kickstand, the Mantis Tiller/Cultivator will help you maintain a bountiful garden and lawn for years to come.
Powerful but Easy to ControlDon't be fooled by the small, compact design of the Mantis Tiller/Cultivator. Though it weighs a mere 20 pounds and has a width of only nine inches, the Mantis is powerful, thanks to its two-cycle, commercial-grade gas engine.
A reliable push-button primer will get you started, but the tines won't move until you squeeze the throttle. Once you've activated the throttle, the patented serpentine tines spin at up to 240 RPM to break through sod--even hard clay--tilling down to a depth of 10 inches.
The Mantis Tiller/Cultivator makes it easy to maintain your garden. Simply reverse the tines to shallow-cultivate depths of up to three inches--it's much faster than using hand tools. And because it tills a nine-inch-wide path, this tool is especially useful in tight spaces and hard-to-reach areas. That's a real advantage for raised-bed gardeners.
Convenient, Versatile, and DurableThe Mantis Tiller/Cultivator features folding handle bars which make it convenient to store in a garage or tool shed.
And with the included border edger accessory and optional attachments (sold separately), the Mantis tiller can be used beyond the confines of your garden. Its lightweight design, convenient carrying handle, and adjustable kickstand make it portable, so adding an accessory such as a hedge trimmer could potentially keep you busy all summer and into the fall.
The tiller/cultivator's durable one-piece cast gear box is designed to last. Additionally, the tines are guaranteed against breakage for the lifetime of the tool.
What's in the BoxGas-powered tiller/cultivator with serpentine tines, border-edging accessory, and kickstand.

Troy-Bilt Horse 21A-682P766 12-Inch 305cc Briggs & Stratton 1450 Series Horse Forward Rotating Rear Tine Tiller Review

Troy-Bilt Horse 21A-682P766 12-Inch 305cc Briggs and Stratton 1450 Series Horse Forward Rotating Rear Tine Tiller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Troy-Bilt Horse more than lives up to its name. I used it to till my garden and get it ready for planting, very easy, just turned it to powder. Much easier than my old Troy-Bilt Pony could do it. I also did some tilling for for my neighbor. Broke new ground for them. I did it 3 inches at a time and it just chewed it up! I kept adding 3 inches until I was 12 inches down. This tiller has the weight and power to do most of the work for you. It is a large machine and is alot to handle.
The one thing I do not like is the kill switch. Each handle has a squeeze switch, only one needs to be squeezed to keep the tiller running. Hence my problem, the tiller does not need a kill switch, only a switch that stops the forward momentum and tines from spinning, like my pony has. The shifter is tight on my horse and can be difficult to get back to neutral. In neutral or reverse you do not need to hold the kill switch to keep the tiller running. The tiller has 2 forward speeds, fast and slow. That shifter needs to have 3 notches, fast, free wheel and slow, so it would be easier to find those 3 spots with that shift lever. It is very easy to start, has always started on the first pull for me. There is room for improvement with the shifting levers and the kill switch, but the Horse Tiller just chews up ground better than any tiller I have ever seen or used in 34 years of gardening.
I would recommend this Tiller to anyone who has more than 1000 sq feet of garden, or has hard clay like I do. My garden is over 2400 sq feet and hard clay so it is perfect for me. The Horse would be hard to use in a small garden even if you have hard clay. If you are tired of rototiller rodeo and being drug around by a tiller that can not dig in and do the hard work, then the Horse is for you.

BCS Rear Tine Tiller 340CC - 26 Inch Review

BCS Rear Tine Tiller 340CC - 26 Inch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I took delivery on one of these beauties about three weeks ago and it is one fine rototiller! The 10hp Honda engine is powerful and reliable. The gear-driven business end of the rototiller is sharp and smooth and twirls around about twice as fast as my old Troybilt, making for very fine work. The tractor has three forward gears -- one of which is apparently designed to pull along a sulky at a speed faster than you can walk -- and will cover about twice, perhaps thrice, as much ground in the same time my old tiller took.
However a buyer should know that assembly is required and the assembly instructions are almost completely inadequate. It will arrive on two pallets--the tractor and the tiller seperately--and you'll have a puzzle that will keep you trying to figure things out for a day or two. So plan on being mechanically inclined.
The buyer should also know that this particular model is probably too big and difficult for my wife to operate. She's the primary gardener and the brains behind our garden. But I'll be the one who'll probably do the tilling. It weighs about 275 pounds and can't just be wrestled around on the turns although the differential transmission helps quite a bit here. A more serious problem is that your left hand has to be above-average in size to cover and operate both the safety switch and the clutch on the left handle.
But it's a wonderful piece of equipment that is at least as good and probably better than I expected for its premium price.

Mantis 7250-15-02 3-Speed Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand Review

Mantis 7250-15-02 3-Speed Electric Tiller/Cultivator with Border Edger and Kickstand
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Mantis based on the reviews of the model without the kickstand (that one had nearly 40 reviews at the time but cost $100 more). You have to watch the prices on these as Amazon constantly changes the price (put one in your cart and the price will likely chage from day to day or week to week). From what I tell the one offered here with a kickstand and the one without are the same (except this one includes the kickstand...a nice bonus).
I'm using the Mantis to till an area where I had an above ground pool. I am well pleased that this thing performs better than I could have hoped for. At first it bounces until it gets it's teeth into the ground then it just eats down to about 9 inches pulverizing the soil and the bit of sand I couldn't remove. It chitters on rocks but the tines seem no worse for the rock contact. I've learned when it's hitting a rock and sort of let it work around the sides of the rock. Sometimes it just kicks the rock behind it.
I should mention this thing makes almost no noise. You can easily work at dawn without waking neighbors. It was also easy to put together; however, the kickstand was a bit of pain to install as the bolts are hard to get to (the main body is in the way).
I give this 5 HUGE stars. I love this thing.

Garden Weasel Review

Garden Weasel
Average Reviews:

I am probably taking my life in my hands by reviewing this item and angering the millions of Garden Weasle's fans, but it just doesn't do it for me. The only way this works in maintenance mode is if the soil has been tilled at the beginning of the planting season and virtually pulverized. If you work your soil and ammend it with add'l peat and topsoil this works o.k. Unfortunately, I don't do anything that labor intensive in spring and usually have a hard time using this. It is an enormous physical struggle to work this contraption through the garden. I suspect that anyone who works their soil before planting will find this does a satisfatory job. I unfortunately probably don't do as much prep-work as I should and find the results lackluster at best.

I received the tiller in timely fashion, assembled it easily and was amazed when the Honda engine fired on the first pull. When the transmission is disengaged it is easy to roll back and forth to the garden.
I had previously had my new garden plot broken up, but a few passes back and forth had it looking like a powder puff...smooth, no clods, and really ready for planting.
All in all, I am pleased with my choice of tiller, even though it was a bit more expensive than some others I could have bought.
