trimmer didn't work on arrival, looked used/refurbished, and is NOT eligible for
amazon return. it's nearly impossible to reach an actual person at poulan and once
you do, they is no way you can manage a return. instead, you need to hoof
it to an authorized dealer and whenever they get to it, they decide if it's fixable or needs
replacement. i paid for overnite shipping for a reason, which is not for the trimmer
to sit at a dealer's. it pretty much seems that they will not allow for a return for
refund only exchange and repair. since i needed a trimmer i ended up doing what i
should have done in the first place and bought a stihl trimmer while awaiting the outcome
of this ill-faited and costly endeavor. unless you got faith in poulan, don't mind having
no recourse at all, and enjoy automated phone trees, i suggest you stick with a reputable
brand or at least a product eligible for amazon return.

Fiskars 9368 7-Inch Folding Saw Review

Fiskars 9368 7-Inch Folding Saw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Three years ago, I purchased a Stihl pruning saw that had a blade manufactured by Fiskars: this was the finest hand saw that I have ever owned. I just purchased two of the Fiskars 7" saws from Amazon, mistakenly thinking that they would be of the same blade quality. I was wrong. The Fiskars saw will not cut with anything like the authority or ease of the Stihl (it cuts at half the speed and with three times the effort), and is likely to be of use only as a paperweight. This "new" Chinese-manufactured Fiskars product, in my opinion, will do a lot to ruin Fiskars otherwise good reputation. Amazon, would you like these saws back?

The Fiskars 7-inch folding saw is an ideal choice for cutting through large tree branches. The fully-hardened stainless steel saw blade is 7-inches long, and has a triple-grind design to cut on the pull and push strokes. When not in use, the saw blade folds up and locks away for safe storage and easy transportation. The ergonomic handle features a soft over-molded grip for added comfort, making this tool an ideal choice for all-day personal or professional use.

Grass Gator 3630 Universal Bump & Feed Replacement String Trimmer Head Review

Grass Gator 3630 Universal Bump and Feed Replacement String Trimmer Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It claims to work with "99% of gas trimmers". Which may be true, with a caveat. Some trimmers have the housing for the reel permanently attatched, no way to remove without breaking it. So, if this is the case, you install the Universal Bump stacked onto the original housing. Which works, but, the spin of the line is now several inches further away, and likely well outside of the guard. I suppose this would be okay if you can adjust the guard to compensate. But generally there isn't a good way to adjust the guard like that.
So, if you are considering this unit, see if you can remove the original reel housing. It should be easy to do if you can. And in that case, this Universal Bump seems to work fairly well.
In my case, the trimmer I used to have had the permanent reel housing. I used the Universal Bump with it, but, it was not really good having the line spin outside the guard. Well, that trimmer has died and I bought a new trimmer. And this new one I got has a removable housing, so I took the Universal Bump off the old trimmer and put it on the new trimmer and I'm quite happy with it.
As far as usage, its basically like any other bump head, other than it seems to be more reliable at feeding the line when you bump it. The original head on my unit seemed to always jam, and this never seems to.
This unit takes a fairly wide range of line sizes, but, the funny thing is, the product discription on their site and on this site says it takes line from .095 to .105. But on the package I got it said from .08 to .130. But I don't think it is too critical, the reel looks like it would probably take about any size line without problems I think.
Aside from the installation issue, the only other problem I had was that cheap line was melting and sticking together. So I started to buy some premium line with titanium and that problem went away.
Grass Gator now makes another similar product, called the EZ Reel. Not quite sure why they have two similar products. I haven't tried the EZ Reel. But, from looking at the information on their website, it has the same installation issue as the Universal Bump. I think the main difference between the two products is that the EZ Reel is supposed to be even easier to load, but I think it requires one specific line size. So I think I will stick with this unit. But check them both out to see which you think you would like better.

The No Brainer from Tanaka couldn't be easier to install and use on your string trimmer. It took me longer to get it out of the package than it did to install it on the end of my Poulan gas powered string trimmer. I really hated replacing the line on my trimmer spool and never could get the line and spool put back just right so it fed out without getting stuck or tangled. The No Brainer really lives up to its name as it truly does take all the guess work out of changing your line and your downtime is minimal when the line needs to be replaced. The design is very well thought out and I have no doubt it will stand up to long term use. I should have bought this a long time ago!

Average Reviews:

If you can get this at a discount price it's not a bad deal. I got mine from Amazon for $67, and at that price, there's really nothing else on the market that is significantly better. But, if you're willing to spend more, then there are better choices.
This model has some benefits - when it runs, it has a lot of power to get through tough weeds. The bump and feed works as well as a bump and feed system can work. The key words are "when it runs." Starting is a bit tough (and yes, I followed the directions to the letter, had the proper oil/gas mix, etc.) and it has a finicky idle. It will also occasionally just cut out under full load. Sometimes it restarts, sometimes you get an aerobic workout with the cord. It's not just a string trimmer, it's an upper body toner!
It got a good review at Popular Mechanics as the leading budget string trimmer. For my needs it's a workable choice - I have a small yard but lots of trees and obstacles that makes using an electric model a real pain due to the cord. If it cuts out before I'm done, I just put it away and try again next time I cut the lawn. But, if you have a big yard and need something that starts and runs reliably (and are willing to spend $175+), then you'd be happier with a model from a more durable, well-built brand such as Echo.
One more thing - if you get one and it breaks, don't even bother trying to deal with the "customer service" folks. You'll just waste a whole lot of your time and nothing will get fixed. Your better option is to donate it to a local school or vocational center - sometimes they have programs where they take in broken equipment, have the kids fix it (as a way of learning small engine repair) and then sell it to raise funds for the school.
UPDATE: The starting problem got worse and worse, to the point that it was almost faster to trim the grass by hand. Ditched it and replaced it with a Troy-Bilt 70SS model. Just a few bucks more (Amazon had a sale on that as well) and it's been a night and day difference. The Troy-Bilt starts every time on no more than 3 pulls, and their spring assist system makes janking the cord a breeze. On the down side, their bump head is not as good as the Weed Eater but what's the benefit of a good bump head when you can't get the thing started or, if it actually starts, have it keep running!! Don't know what the long term reliabiity will be like for the Troy Bilt but so far, it's been a joy to use. Good riddance Weed Eater! Never again!! I take back the three stars and give it a ZERO

PIVOTRIM Trimmer Head - (Better Heads LLC - 1101PTC)
Superb product. I have an Echo trimmer. My original head was throwing line out, especially after hitting an object. Went to a local homeshow and saw a booth advertising the Pivotrim. Although skeptical about booths at such shows, I thought I'd give it a try. Installation was not hard AFTER I figured out that the threads on the shaft were reverse threads (turn CCW). Performance is absolutely superb. When it hits objects, it bounces back, so the line lasts much longer. It uses line that is .095 inches in diameter. Buy from Pivotrim outlet or just go to your local hardware store for any standard line of that thickness. Cut length according to your trimmer. It's as good as the advertisement says!

Makita BBX7600 Commercial Grade 75.6cc 4-Stroke Gas-Powered 195 mph Backpack Blower Review

Makita BBX7600 Commercial Grade 75.6cc 4-Stroke Gas-Powered 195 mph Backpack Blower
Average Reviews:

This is a great blower. I had a craftsman professional blower purchased about 10 years ago. When it finally died, and the repair cost was over 700 dollars, I decided to shop around. After a lot of research, I decided on this blower because of the 4 stroke engine and the power. I couldn't be happier. I have massive oak trees on my property and the massive number of acorns and debris these trees dump is a challenge to keep up with. This blower has handled every last bit perfectly. I couldn't be happier. Easy to start, runs without a problem, offers great power, and great convenience being that it is 4 stroke. While the price is high, especially for a homeowner and not a professional, if you do spend many hours working to keep your yard beautiful, this blower will be a great tool for you and well worth the additional dollars. I looked at home depot and lowes to see what was available, but those blowers were weak and seemed cheaply made, not to mention that the variety was all but non-existent.

Oregon 23736A Professional Chain Saw Bar-Mount Filing Guide Review

Oregon 23736A Professional Chain Saw Bar-Mount Filing Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Helpful? Not? Please vote, so I know someone is reading these :^) I realize this isn't for everyone. I cut 5-10 cords of big wood each year. For most people, a hand file and/or just keeping two or three chains will more than suffice. If, however, you cut more than a couple limbs and saplings per year, you're already familiar with the chain sharpening gambit. The saw shops put the grinding wheel edge on your chain, and it cuts very well, and then it dulls. If you then try to touch up the teeth in the field, you realize the round files don't work with the straight gullet the saw shop's machine put on there. Then you start filing ... and filing ... Lots of folks keep 2 or 3 chains sharpened, and just swap chains when one dulls. Usually, after three chains, you're through cutting anyway (although this is often not the case for me). When done, you'd take them all to the shop at the same time, and you're ready for next time. This is neither practical nor thrifty, thus enter the Oregon Professional series filing guide. You can set filing angles on two planes, ensure equal tooth length, equal gullet depth and equal raker height. That's all you need for a heckuva sharp chain. This is a knockoff (and superior to, IMHO) the old Granberg 104A File Guide (Sears also labeled them). Both are fine, the new Oregon has a second clamp that holds the chain in place for you. The Granberg lacks this. It saves your fingertips a lot of abuse. The new Granberg 106B looks like it has the same sort of clamp, but I can't vouch for it yet. The old Granberg I have gives me fits with the slide bushing sometimes, though it usually works *really* well too. No chain clamp makes it less stable though, thus my filing angles are less consistent.
I would, since it's free, call into Oregon and get their .PDF (Adobe Acrobat file) of how to properly file your chain. It takes about 15 minutes to absorb the information about "up angle", etc., for your particular chain, that you probably don't already know. It's on their website too. Filing "up" means that you file about 3 to 5 degrees up through the gullet of the tooth. Oregon's little document is a big help in understanding how to set up your file guide for a killer edge. Use the filing guide to set up a "hungry" chain (lower the raker teeth) or a ripping chain (square tooth) or a soft wood chain or a hard wood chain ... whatever you want. I detract for a lack of rigidity. I would ideally like to have a BIG, HEAVY piece of equipment in my shop, and this guide out in the woods. The slide/guide is a little flexible, and will definitely let you know when your file is getting old or tanked up with metal.
I use this on the tailgate of my truck fairly well, but I'm better and faster just clamping the whole saw in my vice at home (by the bar). You must file both sides of the chain, thus you will reverse two settings on the guide when you change sides (up-angle and tooth angle). This is another reason why I recommend the free Oregon .PDF or fax they'll send you. All in all, this is for the chainsaw junkie or enthusiast. If you're a 'once-a-year' guy or gal, just buy the file handle with the lines on it for $3, and take your machine to the shop when the teeth get too snaggled and of different lengths. The $40-$50 you spend here is only worth it if you cut a lot. At $6 per sharpening, you can see that most saw owners may take a few years to recoup the cost. A 20" chain takes me around 15 minutes to sharpen (and I may be a little slow). Still, if you don't have the patience to sharpen your own lawn mower blades, you probably don't have the patience for the setup and repetition this operation requires either. The upside is, if you do use this mill, your chain will outperform the old file-handle-with-lines around 2 : 1 ... no joke. If you've never had a well-sharpened chain, it's like tasting chocolate for the first time ... keep the bar tip out of the dirt, and the edge this guide gives you cuts and lasts as well or better than the chain grinders' edges. If you have spent over $40 in one season for chain sharpening, you should own one of these. I'd rather work 15 minutes for a sharp chain, than spend 2 hours at the shop while they get around to it ...

There is a recall on this product. If you have a black spool cap, you are affected. Getting the new spool and cap fixes all of the complaints I am seeing here. I was pretty irritated with this machine before I got my replacement parts.
Clipped from the recall notice:
Trimmers with date codes 200546 through 200645 (representing manufacturing dates of Nov. 14, 2005, through Nov. 6, 2006) are included in this recall. Consumers can find the date code on the underside of the trimmer's handle. Trimmers with black spool caps are included in the recall, but products with orange spool caps are not.
Black & Decker urges consumers to contact them for a free repair kit.

I purchased this trimmer after returning a Black and Decker that turned out to be defective. After being totally disgusted with the lack of quality in trimmers under $100, I started looking around to see what else was out there. I have a Ryobi click-link gas powered string trimmer and so this unit fits right on it. I decided to go for it. This unit is all metal (as in NO PLASTIC anywhere!) and has nice carbon steel blades. It easily cuts through 1/2 inch branches and will gnaw its way through 3/4 inch branches with minimum fuss. You can't stop it. I just trimmed 3 of my 12 foot tall Japanese maple trees and it never stalled once. I have it attached to a 31cc power head. The extra reach and swivel capability means I can easily reach the top of my trees from my ladder. The trimming job on those trees used to take hours with a long handled pruner. Now I can get it done in minutes. This tool is actually comparable to the Stihl hedge trimmer that sells for a lot more money. If you have a power head to put this tool to use, you can't go wrong. Other hedge trimmers in this price range aren't near the quality of this thing, and you don't need a cord to run it. If there is anything on the down side here, it would be the weight. It's a bit heavy to manuever for me so it would be very difficult for my wife to manage. This is no little ladies tool though so keep that in mind guys.

This pole saw cuts like a champ! No complaints, but it is listed here for over $140. Buy the Poulan 810EPT Electric Pole Pruner instead from Amazon and you get the pole saw attachment AND an electric power head that has great power. I'm using that setup and have had no problems. Save some money!

Weed Eater GA2010 Gutter Cleaning Blower Attachment Review

I bought this gutter cleaning item several years ago and it was a lifesaver in our situation. Copper gutters on a lake house w/ LOTS trees - not an easy solution to keep gutters from clogging up but this item saved us a ton of money had we had to call in the professionals to clean our gutters multiple times per fall. We attached it to a small, 2 speed electric blower (round opening is a must.) If you have to get out a ladder to reach upper level gutters (which we don't)at least it is light weight and not too unwieldy. I am buying one today for our son. Make sure you check out the shape of opening on your blower.
